Snowdrop Nature Journal Page on Black Watercolor Paper | Testing Metallic Watercolors

Sometimes creativity is less about mastering materials — and more about questioning them.

In this Nature Journal page, I painted a simple snowdrop in a vase. The inspiration came from my garden, where the first snowdrops quietly announce that spring is on its way.

An open sketchbook featuring a colorful drawing of a snowdrop flower in a purple vase on a textured background, accompanied by two palettes of watercolor paints with a variety of vibrant colors.

At the same time, I wanted to revisit two materials I rarely use:
black watercolor paper and metallic watercolors.

Metallic paints always attract me in the store. They shimmer. They promise something special. But in reality, they often remain untouched in my studio.

Painting on black paper changes everything. Light becomes the main character. Metallic colors glow differently. But it also feels limiting — less forgiving, less subtle.

After this session, I’m still unsure whether these metallic paints will remain part of my stash. And that’s okay.

Nature journaling is not only about documenting what I see. It’s also about understanding my own creative preferences.

And right now?
I’m simply longing for spring.
