My Month in Making: October with Oil Pastels and Mini Paintings

October was a month of small formats. We’re in the middle of remodeling our sunroom, because some of the beams had rot. The carpenters are helping, but there’s still a lot for us to do, and the garden has to be prepared for winter. Add some office work, and there wasn’t much time for big canvases.

A painted canvas featuring a floral arrangement with pink, red, and orange flowers in a white vase against a vibrant yellow background, accompanied by a small butterfly.

I still managed to make a new art journal for my new Lightwish soft oil pastels. I used watercolor paper and tracing paper, so the colors don’t transfer from one page to the next. The pastels blend very easily, and the set of 77 colors offers a good range of bright and more muted shades. I made two art journal pages quite quickly, trying out different techniques. I bought the set on a whim after watching another artist use it. Sometimes my intention not to buy more art supplies just disappears.

The mini painting in this post is based on a page from my Golden Thread Journal (watch the flip-through here: https://youtu.be/h7eOb29sQus). I make mini paintings so that I have more affordable original art, especially for craft shows, where large paintings are hard to sell.
