March means green returns.

For Moodboard #3 inside the Facebook Group Bea’s Mixed Media and More, Marie (Mixed Creativity by Marie) created a moodboard dedicated entirely to green tones.

Instead of planning too much, I began with a spontaneous green background — layering different acrylic hues, letting them mix and overlap. It looked like a joyful mess at first. But sometimes that is exactly where the magic begins.

Mixed media painting of a turquoise vase with green branches created using negative painting technique for March Moodboard #3

Using the method of negative painting, I slowly defined branches and leaves by painting around the shapes rather than filling them in directly. A soft bluish tone became the vase, giving the composition balance and calmness.

I sketched lightly with pencil and refined the lines using an oil-based charcoal pencil to create gentle contrast.

The result feels fresh and clean — like early spring when the garden, meadow and woods begin to wake up again.

If you enjoy intuitive beginnings and structured endings, negative painting might be a technique you’ll love.
