Painting Blue Hydrangeas – A Mixed Media Canvas Inspired by Summer Gardens

In my newest painting, “Blue Hydrangea,” I invite you into a floral daydream of summer gardens and gentle blues. I can’t grow blue hydrangeas in my Swiss garden. However, their lush blooms made a lasting impression on me during my travels in America. Near white cottages, their color truly pops.

Acrylic mixed media painting of bright blue hydrangea blooms on an 80x80 cm canvas, surrounded by soft green leaves and a light background.

This 80 x 80 cm canvas started with a bold neon yellow base. Then, I added expressive marks with a Stabilo All pencil. I built up the background using acrylics in greens, titan buff, and a touch of blue. After that, I layered various hues of blue, violet, and white to create the hydrangea blossoms. Toward the end, I added delicate leaves using one of my handmade stencils and Neo Pastels. The painting, like most of my work, evolved in many layers over time.

Throughout the process, I worked in many layers — building slowly from underpainting to final detail. Here’s a look at a few stages along the way, captured from the video:

You can watch the full painting process in my latest YouTube video. See how it came together, from first marks to final highlights.
