Hey fellow art enthusiasts! Today, I’m excited to share a detailed guide on the captivating world of mono printing also called gel printing. In this tutorial, we’ll dive into using a limited color palette, my custom stencils available on my webpage, and various techniques to create stunning collage papers for painting backgrounds. You can watch the process also in the video down below.
Materials Needed:
- Gel printing plate
- Brayer
- Acrylic paint in teal, yellow-green, sky blue, black, purple, pearlescent, and interference gold
- optional some alcohol ink
- Bubble wrap
- Plain tissue paper and thin printer paper
- Custom stencils from my shop
Step 1: Setting Up Your Workspace
Prepare your gel printing plate and gather your acrylic paints. Lay out your tissue paper and thin printer paper for printing. Don’t forget you also need a roll off paper for cleaning the brayer in between colors.
Step 2: Creating Layers
Start by applying a base color onto the gel plate using a roller. Layer different colors strategically—teal, yellow-green, sky blue, black, and purple—to create depth and interest.
Step 3: Using Stencils and Bubble Wrap
Incorporate your stencils onto the gel plate. Experiment with designs and patterns to add texture and detail. Don’t forget to try using bubble wrap for unique textures!
Step 4: Printing on Tissue Paper and Thin Printer Paper
Carefully lay your tissue paper or thin printer paper onto the gel plate to transfer the painted design. Press gently, then peel off to reveal your first print. Usually I get a second print on the printer paper, this time I rub harder to get all the paint.
Step 5: Building Collage Papers
Repeat the printing process, layering colors and patterns. Combine different techniques to achieve a variety of textures and effects on your collage papers.
Step 6: Final Touches
Once you’re satisfied with your prints, add a touch of pearlescent and interference gold paint for a shimmering finish.
Conclusion:
Mono printing or gel printing offer endless possibilities for creating unique collage papers that can elevate your paintings. Experiment with different color combinations, stencil designs, and textures to discover your artistic style.
