In this week’s Golden Threads Journal video, I worked on a soft but playful mixed media portrait. I began by brushing gesso over the face, neck and dress to create a smooth base. Then I sketched the facial features using Derwent Inktense, letting the water bring out those beautiful, vibrant pigments. I deliberately chose non-realistic colors — sunny yellow and soft purple — simply because they make me happy.

To finish the double spread, I added collage fragments and stitched fabric pieces, including a small cross-stitch bird I rediscovered in my stash. Mark making with Distress Ink, an oil-based charcoal pencil, and final Posca Pen highlights brought everything together.

It’s a joyful page full of texture, color and experimentation — the essence of mixed media.
