Painting Hydrangeas in the Golden Thread Journal – Exploring Four-Color Harmonies with Acrylics

Painting Hydrangeas in the Golden Thread Journal

For this week’s art journal session, I decided to revisit one of my favorite topics from art school — Johannes Itten’s Vierklänge or four-color harmonies. These balanced color chords always fascinate me, and this time I adapted them in my own way inside the Golden Thread Journal — the focus of my new online class.

Acrylic painting of a purple hydrangea bouquet in a terracotta pot on a teal surface, with a yellow background — art journal page by Bea Grob exploring four-color harmony using yellow, purple, blue-green, and red-orange.

I used yellow as a warm background, purple as the dominant hue, and added blue-green and red-orange accents for balance and contrast. The result is this bright hydrangea bouquet that brings light and depth to the spread.

For the process, I sketched lightly with a 4B graphite pencil, then blocked in shapes using acrylic paints (the exact colors are mentioned in the video). Details and darker lines were added with a black Stabilo All pencil. The video is partially narrated — only the painting section is timelapsed — so it’s slightly longer than my usual 10–12 minute format.
