Stories in Their Eyes – Watercolor Girl in My Handmade Journal

Have you ever started sketching a face and wondered—who is she? What story does she hold in her eyes? That’s exactly how I felt while working on this page in my handmade journal. I created this book using a wallpaper sample as the cover and watercolor paper for the pages.

I began with a light pencil sketch using a mechanical pencil, letting the character slowly emerge on the page. I was happy with the shape. I went over the lines with a black Micron pen. I added definition while keeping a loose, expressive feel. Then came the fun part—color! 🎨

For this piece, I used a mix of Jane Davenport watercolors and Schmincke Horadam watercolors. I love how these two brands blend. Jane Davenport’s colors are vibrant and playful. Schmincke Horadam watercolors offer deep, rich tones that add contrast and nuance.

But here’s something I struggle with: How would you describe these women/girls? They aren’t exactly cute, not fully realistic, but something in between—quirky, expressive, maybe even a little mysterious? I’d love to hear your thoughts! Drop a comment below and let me know how you would describe them.

If you enjoy mixed media, sketching, and quirky portraits, check out my YouTube video. I bring this character to life in the video. And if you’re on Instagram, let’s connect—I’d love to see what you’re creating!
